Meet Eustace- How to create a sketchbook

What I have to create for my summer project is an A5 sketchbook where I record 7 days of my summer holiday. Now of course before I can actually start recording I'm going to need to create my sketchbook. What I used to create my book was 3 sheets of white cartridge paper, thick card (for my dragon cover), thin card e.g cereal box (for sketch book) an old envelope addressed to me, a needle and brown thread and a piece of yellow ribbon. I also want to make this book partly C.S Lewis themed since I am going to Oxford this week end and the autor was inspired by different parts of the city.

I folded each of the three sheets in half and put dots at the centre of each page using a pencil. I then put the sheets together and create 3 tiny hols using a needle (but you can uses anything that's sharp with a small point).

Now what I did here was sew the paper directly onto the spin of my book, and then glued the spine to the cover of my book.

I also attached two separate pieces of card covered in brown paper to the cover to make it more sturdy.

As an extra (because its pretty) I made a cover which, once finished I'll be able to place my book inside, to protect it.

After drawing out the design based on Eustace the dragon from Narnia, I began to cut it out using a Stanley knife.

I also made grooves in the wings so the dragon can stand by itself..

I then covered the grooves with tape to reinforce them.

I added three layers of paint to my dragon to cover up any marks or blemishes.

I also drew 5 iconic buildings and landmarks of Oxford on the inside of the cover.

I also attached skewers for the bones in the dragons wings.

After adding the finishing touches I then added in a long piece of ribbon which I wrapped around the dragons neck and tied off at the back. Creating two tight straps that I could place my book into. Therefore finishing off my cover, and book.
